Some are speculating that it is a slight posibility that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid may be ousted in the 2010 midterm elections, re-living the demise of Majority Leader Tom Daschle in 2004.

Though many think he will pull off a win in 2010, the question is still arising, Who would be a possible successor?

A Republican majority is not even slightly possible in 2010, so two Democratic members come to mind to take the front seat if Reid is booted.

Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY). Two big-shot Senators from big-time states are in perfect position for the competition of the year. The Majority Leader of the Senate.

No clear cut winner could be chosen between the two, with both being more aggresively liberal, partisan figures, who many attribute with the 60-member fillibuster-proof majority the dems picked up in January.

Though insiders say that neither men are personally gunning for Reid’s seat, there is no doubt that a showdown will be sparked by a Reid unseating in 2010.

Today, as President Obama spoke to the general assembly of the United Nations in New York, he made a resounding call for the complete ridding of nuclear weapons in the world, “seek the goal of a world without them” and called for the international communtiy to stand up for international law in the face of adversity and enforce the treaties already on the books.

I thought this was a groundbreaking and resounding set of comments by the President, on an issue that has been relatively silent in the White House for many years. President Obama really took the fight to North Korea and countries like it, where nuclear arms races have led to regional instability, saying that they must all be held accountable and “face consequences” for their violation of international law.

The call for action the President made today, is the beginning of what I think to be one of the largest fights for the extermination of nuclear weapons since the first dropped nearly 80 years ago.

Here is a snipet of a Politico.com article I found earlier today.

The telephone town hall, a forum that members of Congress insist offers them an opportunity to reach out to more constituents than through traditionaltown halls, is coming under increasing scrutiny from critics who insist that the events are largely rigged and designed to shield skittish lawmakers from facing hostile questioning.

While the tele-town hall isn’t exactly a new communications tool, it’s hard not to notice the sudden proliferation of these events at a time when members have struggled to control raucous crowds and deal with the presence of unfriendly, camera-wielding attendees who are eager to post unflattering videos on the Internet.

Lawmakers insist the tele-town halls enable them to reach out to far more constituents at any one time than an in-person event would. Conservative activists, however, contend that elected officials don’t want to face the music and prefer a more controlled environment where they can cherry-pick questions and dodge the opposition.

Read more: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0909/27404.html#ixzz0RnBbVKVA

I would have to agree with the “conservative activists” on this one. The heckling and “raucous crowds” have sent members of congress away with their tails in between their legs. I might not agree with the crowds and might think their activism against obamacare to the people who are trying to get their opinions and act on them, is totally rediculous. But, it doesnt mean that the crackpots on Capitol Hill can just run back to their offices and keep safe haven behind their desks and the security of their staff.

Its bull how Congressmen cannot take the heat, but still have the nerve to stay in the kitchen! It just doesn’t make since. I say, stop hiding from the people you have to serve and do your job.
